White Skeleton
These are remains
of many a lost soul, forced to fight on the side of darkness. These white
skeletons walk back and forth, waiting for some vampire hunter to run
into him. Hit them one and hear dem bones rattle! Also seen as Bone Chuckers,
tossing their parts at you. In the future, they bear shields as pirate
skeletons, and if they don't get you, they lose (or should I say use)
their heads...
Vampire Bat
The Bat is the feared master of night
flight. Another pest. When one comes close, leap over its' leathern wings.
Pretty easy, right? Not when inconveniently placed in certain areas. They
fly in an undulating motion (up and down). In the future they're the same,
and later they attack in huge swarms!
Medusa Head
It was said that one look into the
eyes of Medusa would turn a man to stone. These attacking heads seem to
be the Queen Medusa's lesser minions (the Queen won't appear for 100 years,
but Dracula's second form seems to be a Medusa King). Basically, they
move in an undulating fashion, up and down, annoyingly, while coming straight
at you. Wait for the right second to jump over their snaky hair, or take
them out as they come. Once, after Trevor and an unknown helper destroyed
Dracula's Castle, all of the Medusas seem to have been replaced with these
flying skulls! In the future, the Medusa Queen will appear as a giant
Medusa Head, and these Medusa heads will have the power to turn any to
stone!
Zombie
Zombies are the living dead. In Dracula's
Curse, the evil influence of the Curse will wake the dead to attack whoever
stands in the way. Found in Warakiya's cemetery and in Dracula's Castle,
they take their time rising from the graves, so strike quickly! Slowly,
they march out in twos or threes, if given enough time. In the future,
they look like ghosts, are rare, green, and will shoot a geyser of blood
upward when killed.
Mole Man
The Mole Man is a small hunchback
like creature, which likes to leap around and cause trouble. You should
attack when you first see them, before they get the literal jump on you.
To get him, that is, if he's on the ground first, charge, jump, and if
he jumps at the same time, connect with your weapon. You may also find
it useful to equip Holy Water when Harpies are bringing these in. In the
future, the Master Mole Man, Igor, attacks with fireballs, the Mole...Flea
Man returns with new tricks and rides. He appears with War Geese, Bone
Dragons, even their King!
Dragon Skull Cannon
Instruction
Manual Illustration!!!
Dracula discovered a pile of dinosaur skulls and gave them a life of their
own! These Pillars of Bones, as they are called elsewhere, proved to be
useful as they are set in one spot, firing deadly fireballs (they fire
fire). They are found in most stages of Dracula's Curse, and are even
piled on high on top of each other at the Tower of Terror. Later on, they
would take different shades of color and different skull shapes, such
as the cow (?) skull. Eventually, they would be piled higher, able to
turn around and use new flame effects, such as the blowtorch effect and
arc ball effect. Later still, they won't shoot fireballs anymore, but
will blast a flame to cause massive damage! They also become mobile, Mobile
Bone Pillars, a (cow?) skull shrine carried by two skeleton priests.
Dark Knight
He was a Dark and stormy Knight! No.
The Dark Knight is an empty suit of armor, which paces along a given area.
These are a bit unpredictable, as once you sneak up on them, hit them
once, they turn around to get you before you hit it two more times! The
Dark Knight may be encounterd in the Clock Tower of Untimely Death, the
Underground Tunnels, Tower of Terror, and a few places not mentioned.
In the future, they've got shields and stab with their spears! They also
bear tridents, have no heads, can stab upward, and handle their spear
like a deadly Ninja master!
Bone Swordsman
These man-sized armored skeletal
soldiers guard their posts, and draw their swords to attack. Heck, they're
even more effective than the Skull Knight! Don't tell him I said that,
ok? They take about three hits until relinquishing their evil souls. In
the future, they can jump, then toss their weapons!
Flame Ghost
These likeable ghosts appear out of
nowhere and attack by trying to consume you with its' evil fire soul.
At two hits, they are strong for their size. Flame Ghosts are found in
many places, so be cautious. In the future, they show up as small skulls,
flaming corpses, a flaming skull, and a lizard like appearance like the
one shown here. They'll also produce a cute little 'aaooww!' sound when
they die.
Gates of Death
Instruction
Manual Illustration!!!
WASN'T LYING, NOW WAS I ?!?!!?!
:D Named thusly in the instruction book, the Gates of Death skeletons
mimic their foe, which would be you, with bony whips. Be extra careful
around the red ones, they'll regenerate. Later on, they are seldom seen
red. Their arbitrary names are derived from brilliant Japanese word
play on Simon Belmont. Their names are written using the kanji characters
for death and gate. Their pronounciation? Shimon.
Red Gates of Death
Giant Horned Owl
Dracula's
Curse made things grow absurdly large in the Mad Forest, and this Giant
Horned Owl is one of them. When you see their eyes flash in the dark,
expect trouble. Try to get them when they start to spread their wings
to launch an attack. Your best defense is the Axe weapon or Boomerang
found in their only area. In the future, Owls are accompanied by Owl Nights.
Giant Toad
Another victim of the Curse, the toads
in the Morbid Marsh of Morons are... giants. They
hop out of the muck, hoping to hop on you. Don't get too close, as they'll
try to lash at you with their tongues. If they don't succeed, they hop
back in. Use Holy Water to clear 'em away. Don't feel relieved after the
first tussle, they'll appear in the lower reaches of the marsh, too! In
the future, the Giant Toads are absent for a period; only little Toads
appear, and they return to annoy Alucard.
Mud Man
Another exclusive to the Morbid
Marsh is the Mud Man, which inhabits the lower depths of the marsh.
Try to keep above and out of the mud. These will rise up from the muck
in groups. Their numbers are unpredictable. In the game, ANYTHING unpredictable
is VERY DANGEROUS! If you get caught trudging in the mud, attack quickly
with your whip or Holy Water, or Boomerang and keep moving to the goal,
the Big Bad Phantom Bat! Later, they oddly shoot fireballs and they
can actually walk on the surface of the mud. They will also stab you
with their ribs!
Fire Man
Flames are possessed and take on
a human form in Alucard's Cave. They walk about, lighting up the floor
behind them. They are pretty strong, two hits from the strongest whip,
considering that fire is only some kind of chemical reaction. Anyway,
fight fire with fire, and use Holy Water. In the future they fight some
guy named Simon who's on a Quest...and what the L are they doing in
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for the NES?
Mini Mummies
Also called Lightning Mummies, because
of how they appear on the scene, they attack in groups of four, if you
give them time to form into four, and wrappings fly your way. Be on
the lookout for these in Alucard's Cave and the Underground Tunnels.
Take them out with one hit, and they'll relentlessly keep coming! Just
get out of there as quickly as you can, or you're gone. In the future,
mummies as enemies will use their head wrappings as a whip!
Slime
These globs of green goo were first
sighted in the Underground Tunnels, near the domain of Alucard, Drac's
now popular son. They make a series of small hops before making a large
one, which covers lots of ground. They'll even leap high from sight,
only to drop directly on you. These blobs are also found in a couple
of Mansions, don't know much about that. :^) Additionally, they later
slog along the ground like a slug, barely leaping, and you'll see the
Slime King!
Ectoplasm
What's it really called? These things,
which resemble sparks, appear to be clusters of skulls, upon closer
inspection and some creativity. Similar to the Fuzz Busters of SMB fame,
are rethese sparks run the outline of the platforms they're on. They
take about 30-50 hits to destroy, but they can be destroyed.
WHAT A WASTE OF TIME!!!! In the future, they're more or less the same,
and they look like orbs of light...
Floating Eye
Also called the Crying Eye, the
eye keeps to the ceiling of the rooms and when it blinks, a tear of
blood drips down. This blood can be destroyed. The only ways to defeat
it are by using a throwing weapon or somehow getting to the ceiling.
In the future, Evil Eyes chase a man on a Quest, and they have a chain
of a tail.
Raven
The Raven spoke nevermore. Pesky birds!
Avoid them at all costs, Trevor! If you want to get them before they you,
hit em when they swoop low! Your best offense is an Axe or a Boomerang.
These are the other kind of unpredictables so be really careful. In the
future, they're smaller, scarce, and annoying.
Spore Pod
These
are actually plants. Darn Curse. They fly about the mists of the Mad Forest,
with a few staying low, planted to the ground. If you happen to hit or
jump over one, it will burst into four smaller spores. These are only
seen in the Mad Forest, and then again in some castles not in this game.
Something about a Crystal Castle?!? Aw never mind:). Oh, and in the future,
when hit, they will release a huge mass of the spores.
Giant Spider
Giant Spiders come down from the sky
and try to blast you with their babies! Be cautious in the Mad Forest
and various locales, as they will try to get the drop on you from above.
Keep moving! In the future, they keep to the forests with able-to-be-tossed
webs, and finally end up in a Dungeon, fat and bloated, still toss happy.
Red Skeleton
Because
their bones are so saturated with blood, these Red Skeletons will reconstruct
themselves after being hit. They pace back and forth on a given spot.
They have also been seen with whips, and those are even more dangerous.
In the future, they don't really change, but they'll regenerate faster!
Headless Pirate
Water, water everywhere, but not a
drop to drink! This is what remains of the many crewmembers on the Haunted
Ship of Fools, Grant's old ship. These
undead pirates have tattered clothing, carry their heads in their hands
and strike with their Rapier. This enemy is a bit unpredictable. Try to
get in your rage after they strike. Holy Water works well against the
Headless Pirates, just as it would work against any other land touching
enemy. In the future, we see them summoning thunder and lightning with
their weapons!
Bone Gargoyle
These are the reanimated remains of
those gargoyles who live (die?) about the castles. Similar to a Skull
Knight, the head at least, they fly about with small swoops, and when
they come close, a big swoop outta there! Bone Gargoyles are mostly seen
in vertical areas, but have also been sighted in places like the Underground
Tunnels. They will even attack in teams of two. These are slightly unpredictable.
In the future, they haunt the Library, they forget their shields while
looking more like a Gargoyles corpse, and finally, they get their shields
back, along with javelins (they don't use).
Fish Man
As
you will see, the Fish Man will become as regular as the Dragon Skull
Cannons in CastleVania. These creatures can be found anywhere near water.
All heck breaks out in the Sunken Temples of Sarnath with these. They
leap high from the water, land, pace a few steps, then fire two shots
before retreating into the drink. In the future, we see the fish man appear
with a spinning leap, a slide attack, different colors, more muscles (Buff
Bagwells of Fish Men : ) and then, replacement by creatures more dragon
like.
Bone Dragon
Dracula
found a pile of dinosaur bones and gave them life. He made the Dragon
Skull Cannons with them, he even made an Ultimate Evil from them, and
from a mess of backbone and stegosaur skull, he created this: the Bone
Dragon. These are the lesser minions of the Bone Dragon King. These move
more smoothly than their future brethren will. These can take lots of
punishment. About 10 hits. Don't worry, for these have a specific pattern
of moving up and down. Before making a big swing up or down, the Bone
Dragon will make an unnoticeable smaller swing. Know this pattern, and
you can take them down with no weapons at all! In the future these old
bones will become stiffer, then the Bone Dragons will come straight up
from the ground, barely moving at all. Then, their movement becomes smoother
than it ever was. After that, the Bone Dragons become HUGE! Almost the
size of their King! What's next?
I'll tell you! New versions of the Bone Dragons
include super long ones, which will strike without warning, and they'll
spit out evil souls, not flames. The Mole Man will even ride them!
Harpy
A Harpy is a flying creature with
the body of a bird and the head of an ugly woman. Found at the entrance
to CastleVania, the Harpies will flap onto the scene and proceed to drop
Mole Men. They fly, stop, fly stop, fly, stop.... You'll never know, and
probably can't know, when one will appear, so attack quickly with your
Axe, or get the L outta there! In the future, the Harpy has scaly legs,
an even UGLIER face, is replaced by these huge bats, and finally has a
blade and fire cloud attack!
Axe Knight (Axe Man)
These knights are more powerful
than the other standard Dark Knight. The Axe Man paces forward and back,
then he stops and tosses an axe your way, which will return to him.
It takes 8 strong cracks of the whip to take him down.
Later on the Axe Man won't kneel before launching a low axe, he'll remain
absent for a while, and when he returns he gets new tricks, such as
his charge maneuver.
Later on he auditions for Mega Man 6.
He was beaten out by Tomahawk Man.
